This is a copy of chapter 4 of The Handbook of Body Psychotherapy, first published in 2003 and republished in 2015, with many additional chapters. the original edition was the first inclusive attempt of a full picture of the inception and development of the field that had become to commonly be called ‘body psychotherapy’, but what i rather call ’somatic psychotherapy’. i had said many times that i consider Wilhelm Reich to be
the Father of the field of Somatic Psychotherapy; and that Elsa Gindler was its Mother. i am very proud to have been asked to write the mother’s chapter.
